Style Guides
A key aspect of maintaining the editorial integrity of content involves a well-maintained and communicated style guide with consistent direction around grammar, styling, and spelling.
For 10+ years, beginning with AP style in the newspaper world and moving into frequent use of Chicago style (CMOS), which is so prominent in the book publishing industry, I have moved between a variety of styles as both a writer and editor. I have extensive experience with maintaining house styles as well as with custom style guides that cater to specific types of content related to education, tech, and/or media.
Process Documents / Production Workflows
Beyond style, production and process are a large part of the work I have taken responsibility for as an editor within organizations large and small. I enjoy this specific part of the roles of an editor that revolve around helping to create practical workflows that get products out the door, on time and at a high level of quality. This type of work has involved interviewing stakeholders, conducting internal research/audits, and outlining documentation and procedures on which teams can align.
Editing Content / Copy Editing / Quality Control
The job of an editor is never finished! I am proud of my work contributing to all aspects of this editorial cornerstone of the content role across a number of teams in media, publishing, and technology.
The ever-present piece of maintaining editorial standards involves getting into the weeds with content and line edits. From corporate communications and publicity to technology content produced by subject matter experts, a large part of my career as an editor going back to 2014 has involved auditing and editing content to bring it in line with a company’s standards and house style. Again, this aspect of quality control has covered several industries: publishing, media, education, and technology.
